WELCOME TO OUR SEWING LESSONS 

We want your sewing experience at Tracey's Sewing Room to leave you inspired with your newly found skills and experience to want to do more.  Being creative is a wonderful way to relax and take your mind of everything else.  Our lessons are designed to make you feel at ease as you grow your sewing skills no matter what level you are at when you begin. Our group lessons are small so that you get the individualised attention from our trainers.  There is also the option of requesting private lessons if you would prefer - click on the link or visit us at our shop for more information.

Learn To Sew Course

Duration: four 3-hour workshops over four weeks

Sewing Machine

Suitable for a complete beginner or someone who has very little sewing experience.  Adult and teenage courses are offered. Four work-shops of three-hour duration where you will learn to use a sewing machine, make a cushion cover, a set of table mats and a pair of pyjama shorts.

In this workshop you will learn how to use a sewing machine, including how to wind a bobbin and thread the machine, sew straight lines and keep to a seam allowance, sew curves and corners, reverse stitch, hemming, decorative stitches, and how to finish seams. You will also complete a simple project.

In the cushion workshop you will put into practice the following skills: cutting out your cushion cover, sewing straight and keeping to a seam allowance, reverse stitching, sewing corners and finishing off your seams. And you will get to make button holes and sew on buttons.

At the end of this lesson you will take home a great project that makes for a wonderful gift and is something you can use with pride as you will learn to make it all yourself !!  What you will learn includes working with batting, finishing off and making clean sharp corners and top stitching.

Learn to lay and cut out a pattern, learn about fabric grain lines and pattern markings and how to cut your fabric, sew a patch pocket, use bias binding, make fabric straps and sew top stitching. Personalise your apron with decorative stitching. It's a great gift to make for loved ones. 

Make a Pair of Pyjama Shorts

Level: beginner

Workshop Price: £60.00

A perfect sewing project for a beginner, giving you the confidence you need to progress to the next level. In this class you will add to your sewing skills to include understanding pattern markings, taking your measurements, fabric grain lines, making an elastic casing, and sewing a hem.

Learn to Sew Course

Level: beginner

Duration: four 3-hour workshops over four consecutive weeks

Price: £175.00

This course runs over four consecutive weeks and is suitable for a complete beginner, so if you have never sewn before and have always wanted to learn, or you have some knowledge, but you don't have much confidence, then this would be a good starting point. We take adults, and children / teenagers from 12/13 years of age. If possible I try and put the teenagers in a class together with other teenagers.

Week 1: Get to Know Your Sewing Machine

In this 3 hour lesson you will learn how to use a sewing machine.  No need to bring anything for this class, all sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided. Our training room is kitted out with Janome sewing machines that you will be using throughout the course.

What You Will Learn

​

During the workshop you will get to know how to use a sewing machine through a stuctured set of exercises that include:

 

  • How to wind a bobbin;

  • Threading the machine;

  • Sewing straight lines;

  • Keeping to a seam allowance;

  • Sewing curves and corners;

  • Doing reverse stitches;

  • Hemming;

  • Decorative stitches; and

  • How to finish seams.


You will leave feeling inspired to learn more!

Week 2: Sew an Overlapped Cushion Cover

This is a great beginner sewing project. Cushions add a finishing touch to any room and after this lesson you'll go home wanting to add your touch to every room in the house!

 

What You Will Learn
 

You will gain confidence using the skills from your first lesson and learn a little more each week. In the cushion class you will put to practice the following skills:

 

Cutting out your cushion cover;

Sewing in a straight line;

Keeping to a seam allowance;

Reverse stitching;

Sewing corners;

Finishing off your seams; 

Making button holes; and

Sewing on buttons.
 

What You Need to Bring Along


Sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided, however you will need to bring along fabric of your choice for your cushion cover. You will need 50 cm of fabric, three buttons and a 45 cm x 45 cm cushion insert.  Choose a 100% cotton, light weight linen, or light weight soft furnishing fabric - no stretch fabrics for this workshop!!

If you come to the shop before the course we can help you find what you need.  Alternatively you can purchase online using the Fabric and Haberdashery links provided below. We also sell cushion cover kits specifically for this lesson at Tracey's Sewing Room for £10. Please note that the lesson does not include time for choosing and purchasing fabric. This must be done before the class starts.

Week 3: Sew a Set of Four Table Mats

This fun filled lesson will build your confidence as you add to your sewing skills from the previous lessons. At the end of this lesson you will take home a lovely tableware project that is something you can use with pride that you made all by yourself!! It also makes for a great gift.

 

What You Will Learn


In the table mat class your confidence will grow as your skills improve with more practice on what you learned previously and new experiences.  The lesson included the following:

 

  • Learning to work with batting;

  • Finishing off;

  • Making clean, sharp corners; and

  • Top stitching.

​

You’ll also have the option to add your own creative touch playing with some decorative stitching on your sewing machine.

​

What You Need to Bring Along

​

All sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided. You will need to bring your own choice of fabric for the placemats. Suitable fabrics that you can use for this lesson include light weight linen, cotton, linen blends and light weight canvas fabrics. Avoid fabrics that are too thick or heavy and do not buy stretch fabrics!

 

You will need  40 cm of fabric 115/140cm wide and 40 cm of batting. You can buy these online by using the Fabric and Haberdashery links provided below. Alternatively you can purchase the table mat kit that is specially for this lesson from Traceys Sewing Room for £6.50.

Week 4: Sew a Pair of Pyjama Shorts

Your very first wearable item! A perfect sewing project for a beginner, giving you the confidence you need to be able progress to the next level, where you will continually add to your sewing capabilities with projects such as a simple pair of trousers and top (see our Intermediary Courses).

What You Will Learn

 

This is an inspiring and fun class where you will add to your sewing skills with the inclusion of the following:

 

  • Understanding pattern markings;

  • Taking your measurements;

  • Fabric grain lines;

  • Making an elastic casing; and

  • Sewing a hem.

​

What You Need to Bring Along

​

All sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided. You will need to bring your own choice of fabric for the pyjama shorts. Suitable fabrics that you can use for this lesson include cotton blend, chambray, brushed cotton or any light weight fabric. Do not buy any stretch fabrics!

 

The pyjama shorts are made to fit sizes XS to XL.  You will need 1 m of fabric 112 cm wide or 60 cm of fabric if it is 140 cm wide. You also need 1 m or elastic that is 2 cm wide.  You can buy these online by using the Fabric and Haberdashery links provided below. Alternatively you can purchase the pyjama shorts kit specifically for this lesson from Traceys Sewing room for £8.00.

French Apron

Level: beginner

Duration: 4 hours

Price: £65.00

This sewing project is easy enough for a beginner, but to make sure you have the right level of skills to complete this lesson without struggling too much, it is preferable that you have completed the Learn to Sew Course. If you are in any doubt, don't hesitate to give us a call as we want to make sure you get the most out of all our courses.

What You Will Learn

 

In this workshop you will learn the following:

​

  • Understanding sewing pattern instructions and pattern markings;

  • About fabric grain-lines;

  • How to lay your pattern out on your fabric for cutting;

  • Attaching a large patch pocket;

  • Attaching bias binding;

  • Making fabric straps; and

  • Top stitching.

 

​This is a fun sewing project that you will be able to personalize with your own decorative stitching and makes a great gift.

​

What You Need to Bring Along

​

You will need to bring fabric of your choice and some bias binding. This apron can be made in sizes from XS to XL. Fabrics such as cotton, linen and chambray are suitable. You will need  X meters of fabric and 1.3 meters of bias binding.

 

If you come into the shop before the day, we can help you choose the right fabric and bias binding. You can buy these online by using the Fabric and Haberdashery links provided below. Alternatively you can purchase the apron kit specifically for this lesson from Traceys Sewing room - available on request.
