WELCOME TO OUR SEWING LESSONS 

We want your sewing experience at Tracey's Sewing Room to leave you inspired with your newly found skills and experience to want to do more.  Being creative is a wonderful way to relax and take your mind of everything else.  Our lessons are designed to make you feel at ease as you grow your sewing skills no matter what level you are at when you begin. Our group lessons are small so that you get the individualised attention from our trainers.  There is also the option of requesting private lessons if you would prefer - click on the link or visit us at our shop for more information.

Advanced Sewing Course

Level: advanced

Sewing Machine

Suitable for someone with confidence on the sewing machine or who has completed one of the Intermediate Sewing Courses. Four workshops of three-hour duration where you will learn to make a  handy lined zip-up utility bag and a fashionable panelled skirt using more challenging fabrics.

Sewing With Stretch Course

Our multi-purpose, posh tote bag is a wonderful project to show off your sewing skills with lots of attention to detail and accuracy needed. Dress Making Masterclass

Make a lined and perfectly fitted shift dress or fit-and-flare dress. This course is for those who have completed the Advanced Sewing Course or are confident at sewing, but want to improve the fit and finish of their garments to get a professional look. The pattern has 8 variations to choose from.

Advanced Sewing Course

Level: advanced

Duration: four 3-hour workshops over four consecutive weeks

Price: £175.00

This course runs over four consecutive weeks and is suitable for sewing enthusiasts that are confident using a sewing machine or have completed one of the Intermediate Sewing Courses. We take adults, and children / teenagers from 12/13 years of age. If possible we try and put teenagers in a class together with other teenagers. 

Week 1: Make a Lined Zip-up Utility Bag

This fabulous little bag  is one of our best sewing workshops!  It's always a winner!! The bag is lined with a waterproof lining and wadding is used to give the bag some structure. This is a great sewing project if you're wanting to make some beautiful hand made gifts

What You Will Learn

​

During this workshop you will get to know how to create a professional result that you can  be proud of. You will reinforce the skills you picked up at the intermediate level if you have been following our structured set of courses. What you will learn here includes the following:

 

  • How to insert a regular zip;

  • Attaching the waterproof lining;

  • Top stitching; and

  • Making a box shaped base for your bag.


Once you have mastered these skills, you will be able to make utility bags for all your needs, with the added bonus that friends and family will love getting such beautiful, handmade gifts that you have made.

 

What You Need to Bring Along


Sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided, however you will need to bring along fabric, lining, batting and a zip. Choose a 100% cotton, light weight linen, or light weight soft furnishing fabric - no stretch fabrics for this workshop!! A waterproof type of lining is preferable. Remember to tie the colour of the zip in with the fabric you  have chosen. Here are the details:

​

  • 30 cm fabric

  • 30 cm waterproof lining

  • 30 cm iron-on batting

  • 30 cm regular nylon zip

  • Sewing with flimsy fabrics that have a different feel and handle;

  • Finishing off your seams using an over-locker;

  • Inserting a regular zip;

  • Sewing a waist band to your skirt;

  • Making a button hole and sewing a button to your waist band; and

  • Learning how to pin and sew the hem of your skirt.
     

What You Need to Bring Along


Sewing machines, overlockers, tools and accessories are provided, however you will need to bring along fabric of your choice. Choose fabrics such as viscose, challis, charmeuse, crepe de chine, or any fabric with a good drape, but not too sheer. Avoid stretch fabrics and sheer chiffon fabrics. You will also need a matching 20 cm regular zip.

​

Both garments are made using different types of stretch fabric. These are great projects for comfort and fit and expand the skills you developed if you attended our intermediate course on making a Casual Loungewear Top and Bottom.

Week 1 & 2: Make a Unisex Hoodie Top

Over the next 2 weeks you will be making your hoodie top.

What You Will Learn

 

As with our other courses, we will be reinforcing your existing skills  and introducing new skills. What you will learn here includes the following:

​

  • How to take your body measurements;

  • Tracing off the correct pattern size to fit you;

  • Learning about pattern markings and grainlines;

  • How to lay out your fabric for pinning and cutting;

  • Making the necessary markings to place your pocket; and

  • Using the overlocker for sewing your top together.

 

What You Need to Bring Along


Sewing machines, overlockers, tools and accessories are provided. Stretch sweatshirt type fabrics are suitable but nothing too thick - stretch fleece fabrics tend to be a bit too thick and difficult to sew.

​

When we receive your booking request form, we will call you to establish how much stretch fabric you will need plus the cord. Let us have your measurements and we will be able to guide you.

Week 3 & 4: Make a Cross-over Dress

Over the next 2 weeks you will be making your cross-over dress.

What You Will Learn

 

As with your hoodie, we will be reinforcing your existing skills  and introducing new skills. What you will learn here includes the following:

​

  • How to take your body measurements;

  • Tracing off the correct pattern size to fit you;

  • Learning about pattern markings and grainlines;

  • How to lay out your fabric for pinning and cutting;

  • Learning how to sew in a set-in sleeve;

  • Constructing the dress bodice with darts and tucks; and

  • Using the overlocker for sewing your dress together.

 

What You Need to Bring Along


Sewing machines, overlockers, tools and accessories are provided. 

Suitable fabrics are single jersey, spandex blends, interlock and stretch jacquards.

 

When we receive your booking request form, we will call you to establish how much stretch fabric you will need plus elastic. Let us have your measurements and we will be able to guide you.

Dress Making Masterclass

Level: advanced

Duration: five 3.5-hour workshops over five consecutive weeks

Price: £250.00

Make a lined and perfectly fitted shift dress or fit-and-flare dress. This course is for those who have completed the Advanced Sewing Course or are confident at sewing, but want to improve the fit and finish of their garments to get a professional look. The pattern has 8 variations to choose from.

What You Will Learn

 

As with our other courses, we will be reinforcing and building on your existing skills. What you will learn here includes the following:

​

  • How to take your body measurements;

  • Tracing off the correct pattern size to fit you;

  • Learning about pattern markings and grainlines;

  • How to lay out your fabric for pinning and cutting;

 

New skills that we will focus on here include the following:

​​

  • How to make a toile fitting (pronounced "twarhl", a fancy word for a rough fitting);

  • Adjust your pattern according to your toile;

  • How to line your dress; and

  • Inserting an invisible zip.

 

What You Need to Bring Along


Sewing machines, overlockers, tools and accessories are provided.  We will be discussing fabric choice in the first week so no need to purchase your dress fabric beforehand. However, you will need to purchase calico to make your toile fitting. 

​

When we receive your booking request form, we will call you to establish how much calico you will need to bring along. Let us have your measurements and we will be able to guide you.

Duration: two 3-hour workshops over two consecutive weeks

Sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided, however you will need to bring along fabric and the required haberdashery.

 

Choose a 100% cotton fabrics, linen, light weight curtaining and upholstery fabric, denim, corduroy, cotton drill or light weight canvas fabric. Avoid stretch fabrics and fabrics that are very thick. For the lining : 100% cotton, dress lining fabrics, or a rip stop waterproof fabric. Remember to coordinate the colours for the bag, lining and pockets. Here are the details:

  • 120 cm fabric

  • 50 cm lining

  • 50 cm contrast fabric (optional)

  • 120 cm iron-on interfacing

  • 1 x magnetic fastner (optional)

All our advanced workshops give you the chance of sewing garments in more challenging fabrics so part of the learning will be getting more familiar with these fabrics.  There is lots to cover in this sewing course and reinforces what our Intermediary Sewing Course covers:

  • How to take your measurements;

  • Reading sewing pattern markings;

  • Learning about fabric grainlines and naps;

  • Becoming familiar with different pattern piece shapes;

  • Learning how to read sewing pattern instructions; and

  • Putting your garment together.

​

New skills will include the following:

​

  • Making your own binding;

  • Adding side pockets;

  • Adding a centre front patch pocket;

  • Adding loop and tie straps in the front; 

  • Learning how to sequence putting your dungrees together; and

  • Finishing off your dugarees to make them look professional. 

 

This class will increase your confidence in tackling more complex projects.

What You Need to Bring Along

​

All sewing machines, overlockers, tools and accessories are provided. You will need to bring fabric of your choice to the lesson. Fabrics such as corduroy, chambray, light weight denim, linen and linen blends, cotton drill and cotton types are all suitable.

Make a Pair of Pull-on Trousers with Pockets

Level: intermediate

Duration: three 3-hour workshops over three consecutive weeks

Price: £150.00

Expand your sewing skills with this pair of pull-on trousers. Make an easy to sew, pull on pair of trousers with a slim or wide leg. Perfect for lounging around or casual days out. As you become more confident in creating garments like this, there is no limit to what you will be able to make that is made to measure. This is a nice match with the raglan sleeve blouse and makes an impressive outfit.  Then just add the tote bag and you are good to go!

What You Will Learn

 

Over the three weeks that this workshop runs we will take you through all the steps from start to finish for making your garment that include:

 

  • How to take your measurements and choose the pattern size;

  • Reading sewing pattern markings;

  • Learning about fabric grainlines;

  • Becoming familiar with different pattern piece shapes;

  • Learn how to read sewing pattern instructions; and

  • Stitching your trousers together.

​

New skills include:

​

  • Making an elastic casing for the waist band;

  • Marking your pattern pieces for the pocket placement;

  • Learning the sequence for putting your garment together;

  • Learn how to finish your seams using an overlocker; and

  • Finishing your garment like a pro!

 

This is a lot of ground that we will be covering, but as I have allowed plenty of time, there is no need to rush and our classes are kept to a maximum of 6 so you will have plenty of individual attention.​

​

All sewing machines, tools and accessories are provided. You will need to bring your own choice of fabric for your trousers. Suitable fabrics that you can use for this lesson include chambray, light weight denim, linen types, baby cord, cotton viscose and cotton type fabric. Avoid stretch fabrics.

 

When we receive your booking request form, we will call you to establish how much fabric you will need to bring along. You will need to tell us your measurement from floor to waist.
